This is what conservatives have been complaining about since the primaries. Every event, every photoshoot, and now every "public" question is vetted for best effect. While these same pundits crucified GWB for stumbling in his responses, did any of them bother to notice that he wasn't reading a script when he replied. He was replying based on HIS KNOWLEDGE. Obama seems to be replying prescripted answers with the sole intent of shaping their agenda. That's not a public forum, that's a political informerical and for every single one the opposing views should be allowed adequate time to respond. I have never agreed with Helen Thomas on anything, but she comes from the Old School of Journalism that actually has some ethics. I never watched CBS news when Rather was on, but with ABC and NBC in bed with Obama, it seems that CBS is actually positioning itself along more equitable lines. BRAVO

I'm just wondering how well journalists will stand up when WH-powerseeking, ACORN-type goons harass them for asking such questions, for "embarrassing" the WH. Now's the time to adopt the slogan, "Give me liberty or give me death."

Ellen K nails it solid. Brava! Gibbs's giggling and feigned surprise at unaccustomed rebuke is that of a child caught doing something naughty. Maybe now some others of the Stepford Wives Press at these "Town Hall" meetings will shake the cobwebs from their mesmerized brains and act like ... well, the Fourth Estate. At least two of these watchdogs for the public weal have come to recognize that control is as much the hallmark of this administration as it was of Obama's primary campaign. It's at least a beginning.

After doing every thing they could to shill for Obama and roll over for him for a year like trained seals,those few White House reporters who still remember when the news media were supposed to be independent of a party are now suffering buyer's remorse. Helen Thomas has personal sympathies far to the left so if she is finally mad at the Obama press office style of managed news,it must be worse than I imagined. Helen is old enough to remember when something similar happened when repoters in 1962, who really loved JFK, started to ask tougher questions when it dawned on them that they were being lied to and manipultated. See also Clinton White House reporters who started to turn on him, also over a health insurance debate, in August 1993. This does not mean WH reporters will stay tough on Gibbs or Obama for very long, they are just still mad about the Huffington Pst planted questions that Helen referred to.

This is what the first amendment is about, free speach and not canned responses. Gibb's just proved that is not an open and transparent administration. If either Bush press secretaries had done what Gibb' does here, the next day the press corps would have had a field day in condemnations and called for immedate action and dismissal of gibbs. About time the press started to ask some real questions and not just be another part of the White House spin machine.

It's about time! And for Gibbs to be so rude and think this issue is funny is also a testament to this administration's rubuke of civil dialog and free press.

This is one time I agree with Helen Thomas and CBS. The media is beginning to see the light on this administration.

His laughter is like the laughter when obama spoke with 60 minutes. It is degrading, and it tells you that the administration believes they know better what is good for us than we do . The manipulation of the press by George Bush- a combination of excess familiarity with carefully scripted selection of friendly faces was painful enough, but this fellow Gibbs is The Artful Dodger. Or rather, Dithering Dodger. The first thing the press must do, if they have any hope of reviving their own reputations is to demand an end to the scripted briefing. Bring in a fishbowl with everyone's name in a capsule and have a random drawing.
There is also no reason not to have regular weekly national town hall type discussion and debate
involving not just the press, but interested citizens posting questions on line and by phone to thoroughly consider the pressing issues that face the nation. The level of political debate even in the pre-television era utterly dwarfed what we are seeing today. No one is the press in the 50's or 60's would have dreamt of asking Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson or Nixon such inane questions as "Boxers or briefs, Mr. President?"

This is how they do questions in Dictatorships such has communist USSR and Iran. Sadaam Huesain did town halls in this kind of format to control his subjects.

I think that Helen Thomas is that rare person who allows truth to trump ideology. Yes, she's pretty far to the left, but today she showed us what an old-school reporter is all about. Somewhere in Valhalla, George Orwell is nodding in approval. And Chip Reid?! Who knew? I might even consider looking at CBS News again. Now let's see if some other reporters in the room grow some spine.

Helen Thomas has been around for years. She knows whats going on and she is sick of it. She definitely leans left personally in her reporting, but maybe she will help other left leaning liberals realize that they could have done a better job of picking an American candidate to run for President.
Hopefully Obama will keep Gibbs, and I hope no organization is stupid enough to offer him a better paying job. I hope he stays at the WH until the American people who voted this mess in are sick enough to do something about cleaning up the mess. We Republicans are also going to have to wake up and cast out some of the yellow backed Republications and replace them with leatherback Conservatives. There is hope.

A select few at the CIA helped Obama get elected by controlling the public and media.
