A Lesson on How Not To Win Re-Election in Florida's 8th District

By Stuart Rothenberg
After almost 30 years doing this, I shouldn't be surprised by anything Members of Congress do. But even I was taken aback when Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) referred to an adviser to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as a "K Street @#$%&."
Democratic colleagues called the comment "absurd" (Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey) and "inappropriate" (Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland), and Rep. Anthony Weiner (N.Y.) even said that the freshman Congressman is "one fry short of a Happy Meal."
I didn't meet Grayson during either of his two... (Read Full Article)

I wonder how much research Mr. Rothenberg did for this article. By all accounts, no one serious is interested in running against Grayson because Grayson has promised to make this hell for any challenger. Grayson has money and an evil streak a mile long. Not that I like him, but I doubt many republican challengers would be willing to wade through a guaranteed smear campaign that is going to make their reputations smell like dirty diapers. Two prominent business men already bowed when asked by the local GOP. This last guy they came up with is a developer who just moved to the area. While I don't think that the GOP will have a hard time finding things to throw at Grayson, the question is whether anyone will have the stomach for an extended slug match.

I am ashamed to say that this dirtbag is my congressman. At the very least, he is a carpet-bagging ambulance chaser. I did not vote for him. I've sent several emails to his office pointing out in no uncertain terms that he is alienating at least half his constituency with his assinine comments, and each reply I get is the canned "thankyouforyourinterestintheimportanthealthcaredebate...." Grayson is the perfect example of a politician who has completely forgotten he works for the people, and not for the satisfaction of his own hyper-inflated ego. I personally pledge to do everything I can to support whatever competent candidate challenges this piece of pond scum. Grayson is an utter embarrassment to the fine people of Florida's District 8 who had the brains NOT to vote for him.

This man comes across as very strange. He has a mean streak and a huge ego. If dems were smart they'd get someone to run against him before the repubs get their chance. He will go down big. As we've seen people do not vote for unlikeable people.

I'm guessing that, even without the personal characteristics that make Alan Grayson such an unpleasant individual, he'll be swept away as part of the anti-incumbent, anti-Obama/Pelosi/Reid tide in the looming mid-term 2010 elections.

I'm also guessing that few will miss Grayson when he's gone...and most of them work for MSNBC.

[Grayson's bio] also asserts that "life at Harvard wasn't easy. Alan cleaned toilets, and worked as a night watchman."
And we heard that Harvard is keeping that position open for you, dude, just in case your gig in D.C. dries up.

As someone who lives in Grayson's district I can tell you that he won't be in Congress long. Even Grayson knew that he had to mask his beliefs in the campaign. His ads tried to portray him as a family man with some conservative beliefs while attacking the integrity of Keller who I believe had family issues(I forget the details though I believe he had an affair that was public) and was going against his pledge of not seeking more than 2 terms. To be reelected he would have had to reflect what is ads said about himself and at least showing reluctance in supporting a progressive agenda or maybe tried to blend in and rely on name recognition to help him get reelected. Instead he acts like opposition to Democrats simply want people to die. There are many moderates and seniors in his district. How does supporting $500 billion dollar cuts to Medicare and labeling our current medical system a holocaust attract those votes? If the Democrats want to keep the seat they will heavily fund somebody to run against him in the primary.

Graduating from Harvard at or near the top of your class is no proof of your originality and accomplishment as a thinker, your quality as a representative or your standing as a human being. For those proof points, we sometimes are able to witness the performance of a person in Congress.

In this man's case, it's been enlightening.

Get a close look at Grayson over the next 12 months. Enjoy the spectacle of an angry creep humiliating himself and embarrassing those on the left who deemed him their new hero, their unapologetic demagogue, the standard bearer for their most absolutist and dismissive tendencies. Because he'll be sent packing next election day.

Grayson is obviously a turd. All the Ivy League degrees in the world can't be used to polish a turd. All that the Republicans in Orlando, Florida need to do is just find a decent, principled, reasonably likeable, well-funded, limited government conservative who has the balls to grab a hold of the handle and flush this turd down the toilet next November.

If current trends continue (and I expect they will), when all of the flushes around the country are done in Fall of 2010 the GOP will have picked up at least a net gain of 40 seats in the House (regaining control of that body) and at least knocked the Democrats below the 60-vote "filibuster-proof" threshold in the Senate. That will effectively cut in half the one and only term that Obama is ever going to have in the White House, thereby bringing "The Carter Years Redux" to an end.

Sir,
You wrote a great article. Yes, I do wonder the same thing. Why is Grayson constantly telling us how smart he is and how much better than us he is. I heard the same thing about Obama during the election. They both went to Harvard and they both put emphasis about the fact that they were poor!
Yet, you couldn't get Grayson's SAT results and the American people cannot get the President's college transcripts and Law degree.
Maybe both of them used the same advisors?.
Can you research more about his finances and see if Grayson has paid his taxes. Generally, Democrats conviniently forget to pay them...

Grayson is an odious and contemptible man. He's proof that education is no bar against small-mindedness. The man is possibly the most vicious bigot in Congress.

I'm not a Floridian but I find it hard to believe that every potential GOP challenger is quaking in his boots over this guy. Some are probably as wealthy as he and just as egotistical. It is a historically right-leaning district and he hasn't had time to bring home enough bacon to make the seat a lifetime benefice. Plus it is not shaping up to be a good year for incumbents. Florida has a huge coastline and I doubt the freshman congressman is the only one there who knows how to gut a fish.

Whoever runs against this guy just needs to get him in a pubic debate and do some mental judo on him. Let him come out full force being the angry small minded worm that he is and simply be calm and serious and show a sense of humor. People will get it and he'll be done.

I thought his "Die Quickly" presentation was rather enjoyable in its irony since it's the Democrats' plan to ration care and distribute it to people they deem most useful to their society. This guy is just another Harvard lawyer blowhard who thinks spending years reading books in a law library qualifies him as an authority on, well, pretty much everything. I look forward to watching him eat a large slice of humble pie next year.

People, wake up and quit electing lawyers to lead us. They are trained to argue and extract money from people, which is exactly what they do when they get to Washington. They don't know how to create jobs and they don't know how to keep this country safe and prosperous.

Amazing how individuals can come from similar origins and yet draw opposite conclusions from the world around them. Alan Grayson and I are both members of The Tribe who grew up in similar circumstances in the Bronx, and even attended that same "exclusive public high school" (Bronx HS of Science), but he is most misguided not only in his politics, but also in his attitude.

He seems to regard Congress as an extension of the schoolyard cutdown contests of which we are both familiar. Too bad he never grew up beyond that.

Nevertheless, I don't worry about his tenure. Even if we wins re-election in 2010, the GOP-controlled Florida legislature (and it will STILL be GOP-controlled then) will eliminate his district in the 2012 reapportionment.

Go Grayson! @#$%&, act like a GOP'er one time and they all get their feelings hurt and start playing victim. Get over yourself - if you're unwilling to get access to healthcare for all people, then you're helping to kill some people. That's all he said, where's the foul?

Very good analysis of Grayson's political persona. His reliance on his fortune and the Obama coattails will not be nearly as successful in 2010. Yes, he has some traditional politicians hesitant to go up against him because they don't want to compete with him financially. But that is only part of the story.

Grassroots candidates are lining up to run against him. They realize that he is vulnerable because he doesn't relate well with voters. This is not to suggest that he'll be a pushover. He has the ability to raise a lot of money (translation: buy a lot of TV time), and he is well-educated from an academic point of view.

Unfortunately, those advantages only go so far. People like to SEE and MEET their representatives, and Grayson just isn't comfortable with people, especially those who don't agree with him. With District 8's heavy base of elderly and conservative voters, he's running an uphill battle.

Challengers like Patricia Sullivan (http://PatriciaSullivanForCongress.com) are poised to run aggressive campaigns that CONNECT with voters within the district. That is the right strategy for winning in 2010.

It's to bad that we in the 8th District have to wait another year before we get representation in Congress. We sure aren't getting it now. The person elected to represent us is to involve in his own self interests to be bothered with the people of this district. Alan Grayson is not a liked man. After listening to him and reviewing his voting record one realizes he is just a shill of the Democratic party. He ignores the people that elected him and embarrasses all the people. His bombastic manner is nothing more than that of a bully. We all know what happens to bullies and I know the person that will do it, Patricia Sullivan conservative candidate for Graysons' Congressional seat. She's got the nerve, she's the person that filled the ethics complaint that backed Grayson down, and she's the one with the grassroots campaign that is rapidly gaining momentum. She is the one to watch.

I, for one, am anxiously awaiting the 2010 election when both parties will be shocked by the people elected into office. I believe the voters will look at the candidates and their values. The voters will cast their votes based on that and not on the political party.

Both parties have failed. It couldn't be more evident than NY 23. The Republican candidate gets endorsed by all the bigwig Republicans. The party gives her campaign more money than it was worth. The Republican leadership endorsed her. When she realizes she cannot win, she drops out and endorses the Democrat. Neither party wants the current conservative movement to take hold but I believe it is to late.

Watch the campaign of Patricia Sullivan. She is not afraid to take Grayson on and MSM is ignoring her.

Hey cut the guy some slack. After listening to the rants of Bachmann, FOXX (who just called healthcare legislation "domestic terrorism") and YOU LIE Wilson, I don't think the decorum of the GOP reps is anything to write home about. Grayson is a passionate, colorful character who has garnered quite a fan base because he has the courage to stand up for Democratic and liberal principles that put people first. Meanwhile Boner and the GOP is trying to block extending unemployment benefits right before the Holidays. Why is it the GOP never wants to cut war spending, just domestic spending?

First of all, Grayson is not only a loon and is a mean streaked man, but it is his policies that are a leftist shock to the district that he is in. A Center-Right candidate who campaigns against high taxes, spending, is for Constitutional not tyrannical change in Care, trade and education, can beat this dolt. Orange Co. should be a fairly independent GOP-Libertarian even moderate Dem district and Grayson doesn't fit that plan , need or consensus. Go get him without fear. The candidate will get much fiscal support from people round the nation.

Well, if you spend money on the military at least you get guns and bombs.

If you spend money on people with their hands out, you get more people with their hands out.

See any problem here? (I won't be shocked if you don't.)

The stunning thing here is the extraordinary academic credentials...combined with a sock puppet personality. It just goes to show you that even academic elites are capable of acting like 15 years olds on a hissy fit. It's a good example of why the Left's adoration of "clever" "snarky" intellectuals often leads to intolerant leadership filled with sanctimoniousness and self-righteousness. These people truly are vile.

Although there have certainly been ott comments from Reps in congress, none of it has matched what grayson has done so far. I'll agree Bachman's "domestic terrorism" comment was unacceptable...but she wasn't dumping on an individual person the way grayson has. And Wilson's "You Lie" comment was unprofessional...but it WAS correct. We did find out that illegals WOULD have received free health care...until the Dems changed the language in the bill.

And for grayson? This is what I've heard so far:
-The K Street@#$%&comment
-Stating Republicans and fox are the enemies of america
-Stating Republicans just want sick americans to die

And you describe this as "colorful"? I guess you would describe Hitler as "fiesty".

One final point; I live in Michigan where there's massive unemployment, and most of the people I know that are on unemployment don't even start looking for a job until about a month before the benefits run out. The benefits are too generous and last too long. The Dems just don't grasp the concept of creating the wrong incentives for people.

I disagree with almost all of you on Grayson. First of all, it's refreshing to see him stand up and "Swing" back at the Republican far-right. Remember, last November we the American voters, removed the Republicans from power in both houses of congress and in the Presidency. Why? Because the MAJORITY of Americans were as mad as Grayson.
I like him, I like him a lot! I'm not a looney lefty or a (dirty word) "liberal". I'm a fricking conservative southern democrat and a proud US military veteran. So you got one fan of his that you punks can't call a socialist or communist and get away with it. I can "Out-American" you any day , anytime, any place. I will not be "Out-Americaned".
All of the hateful and derogatory comments about Rep Grayson are typical of angry Republicans in denial. You see, we want people like him in government. He is smart, he cares about people, he hates big businesses who are stealing taxpayers money, and he is trying to help the President of the United States change the direction of our country. That's not a bad thing - that's a good thing. It's also what the majority of Americans wanted last November and NOW!
If you find yourself disagreeing with me, then just remember - we voted your people out! You are irrevelant right now. You lost the election! Everybody turned on you after having to deal with mistake after mistake, and lie after lie, for long @#$%& eight years. It's partly my fault, I voted for the @#$%& Texan TWICE! The two biggest mistakes of my 59 year old life!
One more thing, I don't care if Grayson dropped out of elementary school. I know Electrical Engineers with MDA's that don't know ohms law! It means nothing to me, nada, zero whether he has a stack of degrees or NO degree.
What matters to me is he has the gonads to stand up for the people of his district. He's doing that and he's caught my attention from over on the west coast of Florida. H doesn't seem to be the type to "shake in his boots" at the Republican minority, and he knows they are the minority, and that we the democrats hold the power for a change.
I'm willing to vote for him for President of the United States if he were to run.
So, it's not so unanimous after all is it? Grayson is just getting started.

Grayson doesn't stand up for the people of his district - all he does is embarrass us. He's afraid to hold a town hall meeting that isn't packed with his supporters, and if he happens to get a tough question, he evades it. His district is filled with seniors who are worried that Social Security and Medicare will be bankrupted soon and don't think it's wise to give the federal government another big program, like all of America's healthcare, to mishandle. But Grayson doesn't listen. He continues to push for government control of healthcare because, in his Harvard educated pea brain, he knows so much better than we do what is best for us. Here's a news flash, Mr. Grayson - you have ignored us at your own peril. In 2010 we will elect a Patriot, not a politician, who will hear our voices and WILL stand up for us. Patricia Sullivan will help us take our country back to the Constitution and return us to a government of the people, by the people and for the people. So, watch out, Grayson - you're toast in 2010.
