Despite Danger, GOP Tees Up Immigration as 2008 Wedge Issue

RCP Comment Policies
By Mort Kondracke
For the umpteenth time, American voters this year have rejected a nativist approach to illegal immigration. It ought to be a warning to Republicans: Don't make this your 2008 wedge issue.

Election results on Tuesday, especially in Virginia and New York state, also should encourage nervous Democrats that they can support comprehensive immigration reform -- stronger enforcement plus earned legalization -- and prevail.

To temper legitimate concern in the country about the local burdens resulting from failure of the U.S. government to control its borders, both parties in Congress should extend federal "impact aid" to communities whose schools and health facilities are especially affected. (Back to Article)

All of these people who want no laws and no quotas. What if tomorrow India decided to kick out all of its citizens. Would you welcome all of them? In the billions? Where would you put them?

Maybe we should take away all your property and give it to illegals. That would be fitting, seeing you don't care about laws.

So no one should judge anyone else? So because you want to make America an open-bordered utopia with no laws, we can't say anything. I guess you never judge anyone, huh? So, if someone is raped or murdered, you wouldn't want that person in jail. That would be judgmental. Oh vey, it amazes me how stupid liberals have become. Case in point...just look at Hillary.

Walls don't work? Tell it to all the Liberal Politicians who live on gated estates. Ask them how many intruders make it inside.

I think their should be a new tax. We can take 90% of all liberals salaries and give it to all the Illegals. They are ones who truly "care" about them. Let them show it. It would make Hillary so proud.

Isn't funny how anyone who disagrees with ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION is called a racist or someone full of hate?

Americans are not upset that Latinos are coming here. They are upset that people WHO DO NOT CARE ABOUT OUR LAWS are coming here ILLEGALLY. We are a nation of legal immigration... not a nation of law breakers.

We do not want people to come here, break the law, not learn english and be a strain on our welfare system and hospitals.

I believe that anyone who supports ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION has nothing but disdain and hatred for our country. They are the true haters. They are the true racists. It has sad that this vocal minority of "Self Loathing Americans" have such huge mouths.

Mort,

The only reason I read your article was because it was posted on The Drudge Report. After reading it, I can see why no one goes to your website. If you think this issue will hurt Republicans, you are crazy. You have been hanging out with the elite in DC way too long.

Let's see. Hillary and Spitzer wanted to give drivers licesnes to illegals. Then, at the same time, give them voter registration forms. Of course, they made sure it is illegal to check anyones status when they sign up to vote. I guess the liberals feel they can only win elections if every illegal and criminal vote in an election.

I encourage every Republican and Conservative to run with this issue next year. The only people who support illegal immigration is the far left wing of the Dem party.

For Immigration Reform to work, quotas must increase. When it takes more than 10 years, in some countries the waiting list is longer than life expectancy, then people who love our country will cross the border illegally. This is, and always will be, a country of immigrants. It is what makes our country great; and, unless we continue to fight immigration, will keep our country great. I was talking to an immigrant from India and he said something beautiful, "the average child takes 21 years to become productive in society, when an immigrant comes to America they are, generally, instantly productive." Here in Rock Hill, SC, I worked for Tropical Escape, a Chinese/American restaurant where the owner's wife is a Filipino. She has sponsored members of her family to come to America by employing them at her restaurant. These employees are why her restaurant is one of the top stores in town. In 30 years they have quadrupled the size of the restaurant and continue to win "Best Of Awards" from the local paper.

I wouldn't dismiss 'nativism' relative to illegal immigration. It certainly is a big part of the question. Millions of Americans don't like the changing face of their country, with the prospect of even more change if illegal immigration is allowed to continue.

The private poll you mention is probably a false picture of how many oppose 'Amnesty'. Implying that 'right-wing radio talk show hosts' are driving opposition to amnesty is incorrect, in my view. They are conduits, allowing the anti-amnesty fervor to express itself. Republicans didn't 'bow' to pressure, they were representing their constituents, as Congress men should. That is what they are there for. Similarly, they are not 'pandering' as candidates, they are following the wishes of their constituents, Democrats do know about pandering, they are pandering in the opposite direction, to gain Hispanic votes.

'Enforcement-only' campaigns don't succeed because Federal and State authorities won't enforce the laws already on the books. Every time new enforcement laws are mandated, the number of illegal immigrants grows by the millions, proving that there WAS NO enforcement applied. Government is not trusted when they advocate 'enforcement'.

The states you cite as evidence that running on immigration doesn't work, are liberal/blue states. Not a surprise as it's Democrats who want amnesty. As for the Massachusetts special election, the surprise was that a Republican nearly beat a Democrat in the ultra liberal state. Democrats in Congress failed to pass a bill with enforcement plus legalization. What use are amendments to 'restrict benefits' - those are already in place as well, albeit not inforced. It is doubtful that Democrats can win with an 'enforcement-plus-legalizion, they have not prevailed to date as in the Dream Act. another attempt at legalization.
Republican prospects are already in trouble because the states you mentioned are already non-Republican. Win or lose, Republicans are listening to their constituents, who care deeply about the future of an America where in future years would be primarily Hispanic. Democrats should worry too, as eventually Congress will be filled with Hispanics.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST.

I dedicate the following song to those who believe a wall/fence will work,

"I've got 800 miles of open border - right
outside my door. There's minute men in little
pick up trucks who've declared their own
damn war. Now the government wants to build
a barrier like old Berlin 8 feet tall - But if
Uncle Sam sends the illegals home
who's gonna build the wall?

Who's gonna build your wall boys?
Who's gonna mow your lawn?
Who's gonna cook your food when your mexican maid is gone?
Who's gonna wax the floors tonight down at the local mall?
Who's gonna wash your baby's face?
Who's gonna build your wall? "

Walls have never worked in history:
WHY

To provide this answer, it is illustrating the first words of Robert Ludlum in The Bourne Supremacy:

"The land and the water are one, and it is the will of the spirit that determines how man will use the land and the water - again without regard for such abstractions as useless freedom or escapable confinement.

The concern is only with empty stomachs, with women's stomachs, children's stomachs.
Survival. There is nothing else.

Some examples:

The Chinese wall, it didn’t work,

The Berlin wall: a complete failure, but yet you want to built one along the border of Mexico.

The Maginot Line (a line of concrete fortifications, tank obstacles, machine gun posts and other defenses which France constructed along its borders with Germany). Another failure.

This last term is sometimes used today to describe any comically ineffective protection.
One thing is certain; all have proven his futility and uselessness.

Among others, John Cornyn, Republican from Texas, Newt Gingrich who coined Spanish as the language of the ghetto, Tom Tancredo, and others of this party seem to think that behind every effort to to legalize the status of nearly 12 million hardworking immigrants already here, lurks an open invitation to criminals, terrorists and other undesirables from whom the country needs protection.

How come you are not standing up against the demonizing of Latinos, and protest against the wave of hate promoted by some republican elected officials?

They are very vocal, they appear in Tv, radio talk shows, and alike.
And this is hurting our communities.

It appears that the Latino population, followed by African Americans, are the greatest minority in the country.

In other words, they shall vote. When you insult them, I doubt they will agree with you, and many of your followers, in many issues.

We all live in a country where different races, and cultures are present.

Disrespect means CONFRONTATION, instead of WORKING TOGTHER.

God bless America!

AN ENVIRONEMNTAL DISASTER

I admire the work of those who fight to protect the environment. In general, I welcome any effort to protect our ecology and our environment.

Buy, I see with great concern your silence about building a wall along the US-Mexico border. This wall will impair waters, will destroy watersheds, will divert water, some areas will get flooded and other areas will be dry, it willl impact all the wildlife in this region.

Some Republicans and all right extremists are celebrating that an immigration agreement could not be reached. They chose the status quo. The present situation is not working and is causing the death of many people attempting to cross the border. We could have both, secure the border and have an orderly system.

As I said I support unconditionally all causes to protect wildlife.
But we are experiencing a DEAFENING SILENCE in this issue.
Allowing the extremists to take over will impact all of us, including you and the environment.

Could you express your public opposition to this wall?
Could you express your support to fix the immigration system in a humane way?

Thank you for your time.

TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE

U.S. Faces 'Reverse Brain Drain' from Immigration Woes, Study Warns

Foreign entrepreneurs, scientists, skilled workers and students are growingly increasingly frustrated with U.S. immigration laws, and many are returning home, a new study shows.

The result: The United States is facing what the researchers call a “reverse brain drain.”

“For the first time in its history, the United States faces the prospect of a reverse brain-drain,” Wadhwa said in a letter that addressed highlights of the study. “So far, the U.S. has the benefit of attracting the worlds best and brightest. They have typically come here for the freedom and economic opportunities that America offers.

“Now, because of our flawed immigration policies, we have set the stage for the departure of hundreds of thousands of highly skilled professionals - who we have trained in our technology, techniques and markets and made even more valuable,” he added. “This is lose-lose for the U.S.. Our corporations lose key talent that is contributing to innovation and competitiveness, and we end up creating potential competitors.”

Delays in processing have triggered an increasing number of immigrants deciding to return home, he said.

“I was shocked to learn that there were over a million skilled immigrants in what I call ‘immigration limbo.’ I had previously heard numbers in the 200-300 range and thought these numbers were very high,” Wadhwa said. “I doubt that political leaders in the U.S. are aware that there are so many skilled workers waiting in line – and that we may lose many of these.”

And what are the consequences of losing so many skilled workers? According to the study, they contribute a tremendous amount of patented products and services.

“The focus of the immigration has been on the plight of the unskilled workers who have entered the country illegally,” Wadhwa said. “We do need many of these workers and we need to develop a humane and fair solution to this problem. If we wait 5 years to reform the immigration system, the illegal and unskilled will still be here – these poor people have few options.

“But the highly educated and skilled – who are fueling economic growth and contributing significantly to U.S. global competitiveness will be long gone,” he warned. “Our loss will be the gain of other countries.”

The heroes of America are generally heroes of reconciliation, not division.

In politics, some acts are so emblematic and potent that they cannot be undone for decades, as when Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Goldwater was no racist; his constitutional objections were sincere.

Members of the Republican Party actually voted for the Civil Rights Act in higher percentages than Democrats. But all of this was overwhelmed by the symbolism of the moment.

In his autobiography, Colin Powell says that after the Goldwater vote, he went to his car and affixed a Lyndon Johnson bumper sticker, as did many other African Americans. Now Republicans seem to be repeating history with Hispanic Americans.

Some in the party seem pleased… They should be terrified.

A SURGE IN APPLICATIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP

Voter registration is growing among Hispanics as more become citizens and more become enraged at anti-immigrant policies.

JUST A THOUGHT

Several decades ago, immigrants from Hispanic origin came to the USA. They didn’t bother to participate in politics. They came to work and nothing else. Why to bother if the country was doing OK. They didn’t speak the language very well and they thought let’s leave politics in the hands of those who are in power. Working and keeping a job was their main goal. Many even didn’t bother to change their immigrant status as residents.

But a couple of years ago, particularly this year, something happened. Because they cannot be recognized or distinguished by appearance, with the so-called illegals, they started to realize that they had to become citizens to obtain a higher level of protection. They realized that they were being demonized. Many of them are coming to vote for the first time.

Some of this population belongs to the group that came with the amnesty offered by President Reagan in 1986-1988. They too started to become citizens. There is no way that anyone can identify an illegal alien just by looking at them. You cannot tell who is an American citizen just by looking. Latino voters are tired of getting treated as something less than real Americans.

They could be legally here; they could have lived in the U.S. for generations. The only marker is skin color. The effect of the immigration debate on many Latino voters has been to make them feel like their Americanness is being questioned, even if they have been here for many generations.

The rampant xenophobia encased in fear of terrorism has made it critical for the legal immigrants, once illegal, to acquire the status that would grant them immunity from narrow legal persecution. However, it is not strange that in this xenophobic wave these people are feeling being threatened and insulted..

In the meantime, the Republicans had their chance for about 6 years to make a statement that the republican party would take care of the American people and they really showed they don't care by their non-actions and clearly directed actions against inmigrants. However, it is not only what Republicans say; it is also what they don’t say. Republicans have been filibustering everything that comes up in the Senate.

It is true that some Democrats such as Jim Webb, Jon Tester and Claire McCaskill vote with the majority of Republicans to kill the Senate immigration compromise, without offering a realistic and achievable alternative that would establish a more humane policy.

But, it is also undeniable that the most vicious, the most wretched, the most offensive, the most revolting, the most ruthless, the most vilifying, the most repulsive attacks have come and are still coming from Republicans.

Just a few examples to illustrate it.
1) Sensenbrenner wanted the criminalization of these people.
2) Newt Gingrich, Former House speaker, who coined Spanish as the Language of the gheto
3) Fred Thompson just slammed Cubans, suggesting that they come to America not in search of freedom, but to bring “suitcase bombs.”
4) Dana Rohrabacher in his speeches is warning “the end of America as we know it”.
5) Tancredo, his motto: "a scourge that threatens the very future of our nation."
6) J.D Hayworth, not reelected, but still instilling hate. No comments.

The list goes on and on.. .

From the beginning, the bill's most forceful opponents were southern Republicans. GOP Sens. David Vitter of Louisiana, Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Jeff Sessions of Alabama led the charge, often backed by Texan John Cornyn.

One thing is certain, the past six years, the Republicans were mum on all issues with immigration reform as just one of them. They controlled the white house and congress. If there is anytime in which a party is able to get things done, it's when they don't have anyone to really interfere.
Immigration was just one of them.

Indeed, the Hispanic vote is hardly a monolithical block. But what the anti inmigrant rethoric has done is bringing them closer together, unifying and solidifying this block.

Therefore, it seems to me that the most recalcitrant and extreme positions are from Republicans, where no room is for middle ground. This whole episode has branded the Republicans as the anti-inmigrant party. So Republicans have done this at a national level. Pretty transparent move they did, and now the immigrant population, IRISH, PHILLIPINOS and many other immigrant groups, particularly HISPANICS, are aware of this issue.

As mentioned before, the most vicious, the most wretched, the most offensive, the most revolting, the most ruthless, the most vilifying, the most repulsive attacks have come and are still coming from Republicans.

For many of them, the following is an undeniable truth: “illegal immigrant” = equals “all Hispanics” = “terrorists” = “Muslims” an statement so widely and shameless repeated over and over.

At any rate, this is the beginning of the legal immigrant backlash directed against the Republican Party for their position on the immigration bill.

By your actions, you shall be judged.!

Let me ask you this:
CAN YOU DISTIGUISH A MEXICAN-AMERICAN/HISPANIC FROM AN ILLEGAL ALIEN?

There is no way that anyone can identify an illegal alien just by looking at them. They could be legally here; they could have lived in the U.S. for generations. The only marker was skin color and Spanish.

What was the end result in California? Thousands of legal immigrants submitted their citizenship applications so that they could vote. Most of them registered as Democrats. A generation of young Latinos citizens witnessed how Republicans directed ethnic hatred towards for political gain, and are very distrustful of the Republican Party.

Yes we should have better border security. Yes these folks should be coming legally as opposed to illegally. Get rid of these absurd quotas on labor and let the free market forces do their job. Set the quotas for actual immigration to become permanent residents higher to a more reasonable level. Stop fighting supply and demand so we can focus our border security resources on actual threats, not people desperate for work and survival. Get them documented and started getting them in the tax system and then when the bulk are finally in the system cut off services to those who are not so that the rest have an incentive to get legal or leave.

Are their attempts to make foreign labor appear worthless when almost every history book mentions how it saved our butts in WWII and other instances when we had a shortage of unskilled labor

Are their attempts to make foreign labor appear worthless when almost every history book mentions how it saved our butts in WWII and other instances when we had a shortage of unskilled labor meant to just tick them off, hoping Americans have watched enough American Idol that their brains have melted and they forgot about all that? I mean what the hell are they thinking? Why don't they just go on TV and start slapping Latino babies. It'd probably have the same effect.

How come that most of you go along with the idea that Mexico is a partner in the fight against drug trafficking?
But, how come you can not go along with the idea to work together in an immigration plan?
How come you decide to ignore Mexico completely, when you want to build a wall?
Mexicans come here looking for jobs. They don’t come to USA because they want to die in the desert by thirst or drown in the river. They come here looking for a job.

Just realize that you are pouring billions of dollars in places located in the other side of the world. To say that those folks hate you is to say the least. A tenth of this investment in Mexico would solve the problem by creating jobs.

We could have a decent and rational discussion to secure the border. We could work together to stop illicit activities. We could find common solutions to common problems. We could do many things together, similar to Europe with different countries and many more languages involved.

We could be the first line of defense against international terrorism.

But in this way, by hating us, by denigrating us, and trying to harm us, you are shutting the door to any rationality in this discussion.

We are not your enemies. Don’t treat us as such.

I am begging you: Don’t close this door.

God bless America as a country and as a continent!!!

"We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people -- our strength -- from every country and every corner of the world... Thanks to each wave of new arrivals to this land of opportunity, we're a nation forever young, forever bursting with energy and new ideas, and always on the cutting edge, always leading the world to the next frontier."

Do not forget what happened with Hitler and Jews in Europe.

Not so long ago, the biggest dictator on earth came to power driven by anger and hate.
Everything started little by little in Germany. Jews started to be blamed for everything. Just take a look to some of the movies made by Hitler about Jews. In these films, they are depicted as criminals, thieves, a disgrace to Germany, they are filthy, they bring diseases, they are greedy, they should be removed, they should be deported, etc.

Your arguments sound familiar. Similar to the attacks made to Jews that escalated until deport them to concentration camps and exterminate a great deal of innocent people. All based on hate. Hate against other race. Hate against other people.

America had to go and rescue Europe from Hitler and his fanatics. Maybe some of your relatives fought abroad. Maybe some or many died in this fight against hate. Some of my relatives fought is this war.

TANCREDO, like the Lou Dobbs and other, is like the man that was called crazy in Austria and in Germany. But in a blink of an eye he captured Germany's power. He came to the pinnacle of power. He captured and dominated other European countries.

The hate against Jews made Hitler to climb to his actual position. As a result of his ascent and silence and approval of the German population, the killings and destruction were countless. This is also what the Ku Klux Klan tried to do against African Americans in USA, luckily without success. The white supremacists, Nazis, and the KKK are closely related.

Perhaps unknowingly or unwittingly you are helping them.

This is the same mistake that Germans made with Hitler.

What does it prove to the valuable and strained military resources to round up all the indocumentados if radical Muslims manage to pull off another 9-11 or worse?. Let me remind you that some of the terrorists and all failed attempts came through Canada never through Mexico. Let’s concentrate in chasing our real enemies. Not us.

Let me also point out that our countries in North and South America belong to the only continent in the world, besides Europe, with common origins in religion and cultural heritage. No other continent in the world has such homogeneity. Our countries are not in war against neighboring countries. There are no conflicts because of religious differences. But, one thing is sure, we are not your enemies, we are not terrorists. As a matter of fact, down the road, we are your only potential allies against international terrorism.

I do not understand why you cannot see who our common enemy is, nor why you would have us waste time and effort chasing down immigrant workers, instead of chasing terrorists, such as the Fundamental/ radical Islam followers that hate the West, all of us included.

THE RULE OF LAW

WHEN IS THE LAW, THE LAW?

Why are you claiming the rule of law against people that came here to work? Work that many of you don’t want to perform.

“Rule of law” means enforcing laws that are capable of enforcement, otherwise people merely learn disrespect for the law. Obviously, immigration laws that refuse to recognize the inevitable attraction of a lack of unskilled labor on one side of the border and a lack of employment for unskilled labor on the other is not workable no matter how much of the taxpayers' billions get poured down a rathole of “enhanced” enforcement

Did you forget about the prohibition time, when many illegal activities flourished, including the rise of the mafia? This is exactly what happens when laws are NOT capable of enforcement. Black market and illicit activities are the result.

Did you know that President Carter gave pardon for those that did not join the war in Vietnam? Many went to Canada, and others flew to Mexico.

You sure know that President Ford gave full pardon to Nixon because of the Watergate scandal.
And according to what it is known, Nixon violated blatantly the law in many issues and on a great scale. This does not mean that therefore, others must violate the law. But what I am saying is that in the history of this great country there are some examples of amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

But you are in uproar claiming this very same rule of law.

Ruthless to the poor, but silent for others. Quick to harm the weak, but smiling to the strongest.

Isn’t this called hypocrisy?

SOME OF YOU ARE BLATATNTLY INSULTING AMERICAN SOLDIERS .

YES. AMERICAN SOLDIERS OF HISPANIC DESCENT !

Part of my family lives in USA, part of my family lives in Mexico.

One of my uncles fought in the Second World War in Europe. Two other were stationed ready to go abroad when the war ended. Two other uncles fought in Korea.

A cousin of mine went to Vietnam.

One of my nephews has been to Iraq (not only once, but twice !!).
My other nephew is presently fighting in Afghanistan.
Both of my nephews are with the Marine Corps. Semper fi.

The parents of all these American soldiers, my relatives, came here first without proper documentation, with the exception of one, thus illegally. Even one of these Marines was born in Mexico.

They were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their new country.

Let me remind you that many Mexicans came to USA during the Second World War to work in agriculture, mining, and other industries, because the male population was drafted to fight overseas in Europe and Japan..
Many of the present Hispanics are the descendants of those people that stayed here.

Some of these soldiers are from parents that were once illegal. They have even joined the military and died in foreign countries

Let me repeat the words of McCain in one of the debates:
"My friends, I want you the next time you're down in Washington, D.C. to go to the Vietnam War Memorial and look at the names engraved in black granite," he said. "You'll find a whole lot of Hispanic names.”

My uncles and cousins of my American family are in disbelief by some statements.

Why do you hate us so much, why do you want to harm us?
We are not terrorists!
Do you believe in God? Do you have a religion?

United we stand.
Divided we fall

And by the way...

It's not "enforcement only", it's enforcement FIRST. I think we have every right to demand that considering the history of non-enforcement despite many promises on this issue. Prove to us that you'll finally ACTUALLY enforce the immigration laws and stop the flow on our borders, and punish those who employ illegals, and then we'll talk about the rest. But we won't be fooled again into giving you the amnesty first to go along with mere promises of enforcement that never end up amounting to anything. We've been fooled to often on that score by the likes of Mort and have learned our lesson.

Stop the flow and enforce our laws. Most illegals will simply leave on their own if we do this. No mass deportations needed. Once we've proven we're serious about enforcement for a few years, THEN we will be perfectly willing to talk about "paths to citizenship" for those remaining if you'd like.

What on earth is wrong with doing it that way? Doesn't that make perfect sense and appease everybody? Where your way, Mort, forces us to buy that enforcement will actually occur when it never has in past amnesties?

What Mort isn't telling you...

Democrats in the places he mentioned neutralized the immigration issue by campaigning on it just as tough as the Republicans - or at least coming off as such in their advertising. The issue isn't a loser for the Republicans if the Democrats think they have to sound just as tough on it as "nativists" to survive. The Dems have so far been successful at confusing the issue and keeping their weak-on-enforcement ways unfocused in the minds of the people, but it won't always be this way if the Republicans get their acts together.

People overwhelmingly support enforcement first, as polls that ask the question always show. In the polls Mort sites here, people do support paths to citizenships simply because they think that that naturally goes along with enforcement, as that's such common sense. Of course, in reality, that is not the case. But when asked more honestly, if they prefer enforcement FIRST, and a path to citizenship only after enforcement has finally been proven to work, then people overwhelmingly (70% or so) pick that option over "comprehensive reform" in the polls that bother to ask this question.

AMNESTY CONSIDERATIONS

It is very economically advantageous to use cheap Mexican seasonal agricultural guest workers; it is very socially and economically disadvantageous to let them stay after the crop is harvested.

When seasonal guest workers do return to Mexico at end of the growing season, they return with money and experience, to contribute to the development of Mexico; and each year, when a new group of seasonal guest workers comes, they are eager to work for the same low non-citizen wages.

When the seasonal guest workers come from all of the countries of Latin America, on a strict quota system, then every country benefits, not Mexico exclusively; and when they are well treated guest workers, the experience is mutually positive.

When seasonal guest workers return to Mexico at end of the growing season, they do not drive down the wages of American workers, by competing for low paying jobs in landscaping, construction, sanitation, and housekeeping; and they do not use American governmental social services.

Mexico is land very rich in natural resources; what makes it so socially and economically retarded are its Mexican People; and wherever they immigrate they bring their deplorable civilization with them - it is so deplorable than none of them want to return to it.

The Mexican dream of regaining political control over Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California is America’s worst nightmare. Starting at all of the border towns, and spreading northward throughout America, like cancers, are thousands of deplorable Mexican neighborhoods. With each deportation America looks, smells, and sounds less like socially and economically deplorable Mexico. America is presently occupied by over 12 million aliens, mostly Mexicans.

With the deportation of all the illegal immigrants, students will again be able to get good paying summer jobs, to learn responsibility and earn their way through college; blue-collar wages will rise; border towns will not be slums; Spanish will not be a second language; crime will go down; hospitals and prisons will not be overcrowded.

When all of the illegal aliens are deported, some Democrats and some Republicans will lose millions of political supporters, and the large sums of money that they receive from the Mexican Lobby; American businesses that exploit cheap Mexican labor will their lose their illegal competitive advantages.

No advanced civilization in the World can coexist side by side with a retarded civilization, without a great wall or fence, strict guest labor laws, and armed border guards.

ON that movie: It looks like growers and anti rule of law pro illegal propoganda. The fact is, growers have not even attempted to find Americans to the do the work ( I have checked in our area). In our area they have not contacted the prisons system to set up a win win like Co an Idaho did. They are not innovating with robotics like other 1st world countries (machnine pickers same no. grapes in 1 hour as 34 people). No, they just want taxpayer subsidized cheap labor.

The article did not talk about races where illegal immigration had an effect, like in Mass where the Dems held on to what should have been a secure seat by the skin of their teeth,

In 2008, all bets are off. There are too many Dems like myself who will not vote for a Dem now because of their anti rule of law, illegal stance, and just as many Repubs who are walking away from their party due to the Bush policies: Iraq, Debt, North American Union. I don't think you can rely on what has happened in the past.

Mort has some good points. Republicans are not "getting" the xenophopic aspect
of the "anti-immigrant" rethoric. Many long time GOP members have left the room because they do find the tone and methods of "anti-illegal" movement civil, humane or rational. Voters are being alienated. Minute men type nay-sayers are blocking any legislation that comes up. Hispanics and thier families are frightened and rightfully so. Tying the Hispanic Immigrant worker to the "scary terrorist theory" has really crossed a line with many who still have the ability to reason.

The GOP party "solution" to a lack of Immigrant Visa's is "they should stand in line and take thier turn like everyone else" is disingenous. No line exists for these workers, or they would have gotten a VISA to avoid this hassle. There is a supply of jobs and a need for workers the simple answer is to produce the VISA's and stop calling giving out VISA's amnesty. We have a low birth rate and a shrinking labor force with a large number of service sector jobs in what was a growing economy.

Its extremely bad fiscal policy to have 10-15 million people not on the federal tax rolls. (although this effects the state more than the feds because they get the unmatched funds) It certainly is not fair to those who contributing. The "FIX" would get them on the rolls and that is being blocked. Its a manufactured crisis that has deflected the national discussion to a topic that everyone seems very resolved NOT to resolve. Quite the conundrum.

Talk Show Hosts have created a cottage industry and become thier own PAC on this issue. Rush and Dobbs have been laughing all the way to the bank. (*so have Haliburton subsidiaries who run PRISON FOR PROFIT outfits in remote locations coast to coast.) The fiscal irresponsiblity of the "anti-immigrant" diatribe is another area the Media colludes with illegal bashers. The LIES of the "illegal bashing movement" are outrageous and ill thought out. The Rule of Law has nothing to do with this, MOB mentality does. Of course Lou Dobbs wants no Amenesty, before he got in the running for the Joseph Goebbels Award he was virtually a nobody. Yesterday I heard another talk show host interviewing him. What the heck is that? When talk show hosts start routinely interviewing each other something is Very Very wrong people.

The typical disgruntled angry talk show caller has taken the bait and thinks that there is a way for these people to come to the US legally and Mexican workers simply don't take the time and effort to apply for a greencard. The "truth" comes through in the surveys which tell us 2 things, people do not want scaming of the system via not paying their fair share and contributing to the tax base like they are AND they also "want to create a path to citizenship" so these folks can become legal. The discussion of AMNESTY in here convolutes the argument because Dobbs and crowd deliberately muddy the water. Workers have to be forgiven an illegal entry under current immigration law to be eligible to be here legally. They cannot be "jumping any line" when the line does not exist. We have to create a line for them to get in. At each point there has been an attempt to create a line, nay-sayers bring up the line jumping issue and call it "Amnesty". The results of the surveys reflect how confused and uninformed the common man is. The believe the Media actually is reporting all sides of this issue.

We don't "reward lawbreakers, but we punish taxpayers? Keeping these folks off the tax rolls while we do absolutely stinking nothing is self imposed punishment for taxpayers.

The "anti-illegals" are costing us a fortune insisting on buidling up a massive government infrastructure to "combat illegals" . This is not only fiscally irresponsible its patently ludicrious on the face of it. We know like the drug war its futile, it will have the inverse affect of creating a more dangerous and criminal underground economy inhabited by ever more nefarious characters. Right on the heels of the new batch of super coyotes we have forced into the marketplace will be a new crop of boderline criminal "border cops". Where does it end?

I invite any one of the 'anti-folks" to spend a little more time looking at Immigration math from a how can we have a win-win perspective. Simply stated its not a tax savings to create additional infrastructure to arrest, detain and deport a significant number of immigrants to "rid us of the percieved plague". Business losses are left uncalculated and the misery and suffering and the police state of affairs is largely ignored in the discussion. It seems far more "fun" to talk about the giant bus we are going to put these people on and wave them goodbye. Its the most unrealistic undertaking that as gotten traction in my lifetime.

An excellent example of the Insantiy of the Immigration debate comes from GOP Congresswoman Sue Myrick. She is playing the Immigration Card hard and heavey in Mecklenburg County. Her reaction to Bank of America extending credit to people with ITN numbers (which does not necessarily mean you are here illegally) was to take her money across the street and put it in Wachovia in protest. Wachovia outsourced 5000 jobs in her district. What message is that sending? And why doesn't the media have a feeding frezny on her blatant stupidty?

Mexico already has a challenged economy. Security is an issue. Mexico is a 2nd world country, do we want to see it transformed into a 3rd world? After all they are our next door neighbor. What will be the effects of cutting off more of thier economy? Mexico's third largest source of income is remittances. When we cut that off how will having a destitute neighbor on our block improve our situation? What will be the effects of "landowners" who hold rental contracts on the business's and residences inhabited by these 12-15 million?

Will the "middle class" Americans fare better if we actually succeed in shutting down the plants completely and sending them to relocate in Mexico because the Minute Men tampering with thier workforce has made it too much of a hassle to do business here? From where I am sitting it becomes a pretty nasty fog. Is the GOP in favor of criminalizing WORK ? ICE raiding plants and all kinds of work sites. What message does that send?

Legislators respond in fear to "fixing" the problem by creating a legal path for those who are not eligible under any other program and are obviously being accomodated in our economy via jobs.
Not fixing the problem which is a lack of VISA's by refusing to recognize the growth in our economy and the lack of workers is not a solution and actually fuels the problem.

Failing to provide a SOLUTION is the problem. GOP has become negative, nasty and many want out because there is no vision only hate speech. Mort has lots of good points here.

My question is why does any American think the Government has a better solution that will
benefit the taxpayer and solve a problem? In the end what is a bad situation for tax payers, illegals not being on the rolls will become a NIGHTMARE for taxpayers when we eventually see the full monty on the $$$$ "enforcement only approach".

Roughly a third of all illegal aliens live in households with a US Citizen family member who will be deeply psychologically and potentially financially scarred by the missing illegal. Over 98 percent of our citizens "claim" to be people of faith or have a spiritual dimension in thier lives. So my suggestion turn the other cheek, forgive and forget, live and let live, judge no lest ye be judged or.... OR just Shut up and Sit down.

This article is a bunch of nonsense... It`s the typical, if you don`t agree with me, you get called names crap... The majority of the American people want the border secured, and the current immigration laws enforced, period... We don`t want piecemeal amnesties, driver licenses, and all the other pandering... Remember in June when we shut down the congress switchboard, that`s just the beginning... He uses the example of Tuesdays elections, for politicians to support amnesty, for whatever reason... Well look at Barletta in Penn., he won by a landslide, so there goes your theory, Mort... Let the demo-rats and the rinos take the amnesty stance, they`ll see what that gets them, the unemployment line!... This article is typical pro-illegal alien propaganda by the fading MSM... Go to americanpatrol.com for the real truth about illegal immigration.

Relatively few politicians actually take a stand against illegal immigration, most votes show that Democrats and Republicans are both aligned against the people.
If a politician is considered corrupt or inept, their view on immigration will not save them, DUH. Whoever thought it would do not get it.

Witness the polls on Democrat Governor Blago in Illinois, people are not sure if its corruptness or ineptness on his part, but his view on illegal immigration isn't what counts and has no bearing on the bigger picture. Even if he were against illegal immigration, they would still want a recall.

Taking a stand against illegal immigration can help either Democrats or Republicans, especially if that stand is related to other issues, like healthcare, jobs, etc. It is easy enough to link the other issues, the reports are there from the GAO, and various other groups.

"nativist" doesn't apply to those against illegal immigration in most cases. Unless you have a different definition of "nativist" then the dictionary does.

Many Americans (I presume you are referring to US citizens) do feel that a "path to citizenship" is a possibility, that means we aren't nativists. The definition of "path to citizenship" is what counts. Congress and the U.S. citizens clearly have two different views on what that means.

"In The Wall Street Journal last month, conservative think tank president Richard Nadler wrote that his study of 145 majority-Hispanic precincts showed that “immigration policies that induce mass fear among illegal residents will induce mass anger among the legal residents who share their heritage.”"

Your suggestion is that the Democrat party, and the Republican party with them should betray the citizens based on the "fear" of those here illegally and those that sympathize with them on a racial basis.

Just for starters, no foreign citizens should not be part of this. This is a decision for legal citizens of this country to make, with consideration of the veiws of those here legally. Foreign countries nor their citizens have no reason to act in the best interests of this country or its people.

Of course there would be "fear". You break the law, you know law enforcement is or may be involved. You feel "fear", apprehension. Thats reasonable, it is understandable but not a reason to not enforce the law.

While I can understand the sympathies of those legally here with those illegally here, their position is only a very small part of the bigger picture.

The conclusion? Those politicians from either party, that support the citizens of the country and work towards immigration enforcement, are not only doing the right thing for this country, but it will help them on the vote.

You also forgot to mention those that were helped by their illegal immigration stance, but that may just be your partisan view showing through.

Mort, I've watched you on TV for more years than I remember, for reasons I don't understand. I can't remember when you were ever right about anything. I guess you're like second base. You represent a place to touch to insure that I don't wander further from my home base.
Even if, big if, you're right about how Americans feel about amnesty, there are enough core voters who detest amnesty to stay home and defeat the Republican candidate. One thing the Washington crowd can never grasp is that people with principles live by those principles, not by the current political fad. Republicans had better pay attention to the immigrant issue and there'd better be some progress before the end of this presidency.

You're nuts, Mort. The only way Democrats can win on immigration is to say they want the fence and total control over borders and employers BEFORE designing a path to citizenship for illegals. Furthermore, they must say any illegal who does not want to be a citizen must leave, unless here on a short visiting-worker program, during which he is totally monitored. They can't leave it between staying here illegally without harm, and paying a fine, learning English, etc., only only if you wish to become a citizen. Of course they could say give them a drivers' licnese with great big red letters on it which announce the bearer is an illegal alien. At least such a license could not be used for voting.

Refusing to reward law breaking immigrants is the right thing to do.

If that hurts politically, then it's just the price that must be paid for doing the right thing.

"Illegal Immigration" is an important issue for the citizens of the United States who value this democracy and hope that our grandchildren will have the US Democracy to pass on to their children.

Big Business wants "cheap labor" through illegal immigration. They are greedy and unscrupulous and don't want to pay the real costs for such "labor". By cheating the system, businesses don't have to pay the employment taxes, living wages, health care costs and costs of education for the children of the invasion of illegals.

As typical of the Republican mentality, they support the nationalization of expenses to support the
"human side of illegal immigrantion" but want to exploit all their worth and be allowed to privatize their tremendous profits and not pay their fair share of taxes.

It appears as though most of the agri businesses that US taxpayers are subsidizing are also the ones who consider themselved entitled to all the benefits of "illegal immigration'.

The American people have to take a stand. And I will tell you, though difficult to resist the "face" of the struggling "illegal" immigrant, I believe I am in the battle to save this democracy for future generations . Without "law and order" there is chaos. First we save the country, then we help the people of Mexico do what they have to in order to rid their nation of the poverty, crime and corruption that exists in their midst.

The majority of U.S. citizens favor giving a path to citizens ship to illegal aliens? I do not believe so. I read many different papers and web sites and while it appears the press is in favor of granting a path to citizenship to illegal aliens the vast majority wants to see those illegals out of the country ASAP! I must wonder where you folks obtain this data that is so easily printed on what the citizens of this country want. I suppose it must come from the same politicians who site the same flawed figures and who see a vast new group of voters who will support those who vote to give citizenship to these illegal aliens. All I can say is WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE! The "Silent Majority" have been yelling at the politicians and the reporters who cite these false and incomprehensible figures.

We do NOT favor either a "path to citizenship" nor "amnesty" for those illegal aliens who break our laws to come into the country, who march in our streets demanding their "rights" and who drive the wages down because they agree to work for under the table wages where the employer pays no taxes of any kind. I hope every one of these illegal aliens tell these employers that they want to be paid at least the minimum wage and holds out for past wages. These same people will end up paying past back wages due to these illegals, plus fines and penalties. Then see how "cheap" labor can get real expensive.

I am a staunch conservative but most of my friends are liberal or at best centrists. With one exception, they all want illegal immigration to be dealt with. And by that I don't mean amnesty. Build a fence, deny them benefits, enforce employment laws...but no amnesty.

Does Mort or any other inside the beltway "pundit" ever get outside the beltway? Does he read blogs? Does he have discussions with regular people? The answer is most likely a big no. If he did he would never write such drivel.

Any poll that says 58% of people want amnesty is pure bull. Go outside San Francisco and NYC and if you can find 20/100 people who support amnesty I would be shocked.

In the countries where there is a large minority there are problems-England,France,Spain have learned perhaps too late.We shouldn't let very many from any one society come here to stay. If no Americans want ag jobs, then let some come in with pictures and finger prints for temperary seasonal work and then return home.
Eliminate the baby law. Let's learn from Europes mistake.

This piece is nothing more than unoriginal, open-borders, globalist propaganda. In the same week that the AgJobs guest worker bill was pulled from the Senate floor, due to lack of support, the assertions here are contrary to political reality. His bias is readily apparent in his use of the term “nativist” for anyone who disagrees with him. (I’m surprised that h
