Kill Bill

RCP Comment Policies
By David Harsanyi
Last week, Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner referred to the bailout -- excuse me, financial rescue package -- as a "crap sandwich." Now the Senate has provided Americans with a 6-foot crap hero (with fancy toppings!).

In a pitiably self-congratulatory news conference after the bailout vote, Senate leaders stood in wonderment of their own awe-inspiring character. What Americans learned, though, was that bribery is the only way to push a dreadful bill through the congressional birth canal. Funny, I missed that episode of "Schoolhouse Rock." Very good article. Perhaps the next President can use signing statements like the current president to ignore any thing he doesn't like. Where did we fail as a country to allow a six level disaster like this happen. It's a little like health care that's added layer upon layer of administration to bulk up the bills of the unfortunate sick.

Well said, David! I share the same indignation over this pork of a $700 billion bailout.

To recap.

HoR proposes a bailout.

Fails.

DJIA falls by 777

DJIA rises by about 400

Senate threatens a bill with sweeteners

DJIA drops about 350

Senate passes bill

DJIA about steady

House decided to vote

DJIA rises by 300

House votes in the pork-laden bill

DJIA drops by 450!

Well, so much for the BAILOUT-OR-THE-DJIA-GETS-IT! threat!

Tim303 - When we have government buying loans and flipping we're already on our way to socialism. The Denver Post probably "gets it" but thankfully they have Harsanyi in the paper or it would be wall to wall liberals.

I love the part about how the gummint is now going to get into the real estate flipping business in a really big way and (supposedly) make us all lots of money, eventually -- something which Harsanyi didn't even touch on, though I've heard this rationale for passing the bill repeatedly over the last couple of weeks. Wasn't it exactly this sort of thinking which got the real estate and mortgage and credit markets into this mess in the first place?

The populace is quite correct in being skeptical about this bill and thinking they smell a big rat here. Not the least because they intuit that given a "crisis", politicians are almost certain to do exactly the wrong thing.

This has all come about because presidential elections are "all about the economy." The situation is real and has been teetering for some time now. Maybe even for years. But the timing is all politics. Voters are being manipulated and the cost is nothing less than obscene. Shame on us for electing these elitist fools. The country would be much better off if we replaced them all with small town mayors.

Denver has a lot of suburban houses but the Denver Post doesn't seem to get it. Sure, the fact that our very own wallets are going to be emptied to bail out Wall. St. sucks.

Whatl else would work? Well, some CPAs I've been talking to have a good idea: give all the money to homeowners. Give everyone who has a home loan a two year furlough amortized over 30 years. It would cost nothing and fix things pretty quick.

Or are you not ready for socialism? Thought not. Vote for the bailout.
